NYC Mayor Adams heading to Mexico with two weeks left in office

With just two weeks left in office, Mayor Adams is heading to Mexico — his fourth international trip since October, the Daily News has learned.

Sources with direct knowledge said Adams — who’s actively trying to line up a post-City Hall job — is expected to depart for Mexico City on Tuesday evening. The sources did not immediately know how long he’ll be away for or if he has any other planned stops.

Since October, Adams has gone on trips to Albania, Israel and Uzbekistan. All of those trips were at least in part city taxpayer-funded and involved meetings with local government officials.

Adams has also since late last month been to New Orleans, Boston and Washington, D.C. for taxpayer-funded trips to, among other things, receive an award for battling antisemitism from a group that had already honored him during his visit to Israel.

The flurry of travel comes as Adams is planning his next career move. Sources close to the mayor have said he’s entertaining job offers with international components, including one opportunity related to an Israeli construction company.

It wasn’t immediately clear how Adams’ Mexico jaunt is being paid for or what the purpose is of his visit to the U.S. southern neighbor. Adams spokesman Fabien Levy did not return a request for comment.

Adams’ recent travels have drawn criticism from those questioning the appropriateness of him taking this many city-funded trips on his way out the door.

“He’s got a few months left, and I’d think he would be making sure your legacy — your education, your housing, every last little bit is done,” Councilwoman Gale Brewer, a former Manhattan borough president, told the New York Times in October. “I thought that’s what he’d be doing.”

Adams is leaving office Dec. 31 after a single term rocked by a number of corruption scandals, including his own federal indictment, which was tossed this past spring by President Trump’s administration, which said it needed the mayor’s help enforcing the president’s immigration crackdown.

Adams’ indictment alleged, among other accusations, that he accepted comped luxury airline tickets as bribes from Turkish government operatives in exchange for political favors.

During a press briefing for select media outlets Monday, Adams said he’s eager to get back to traveling once he leaves office, according to a recording of the event obtained by The News.

His successor, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, is set to be sworn in Jan. 1. Adams recently said he’s not sure whether he’ll attend Mamdani’s inauguration.
