It was always a long shot, but Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson will not play again in 2025
Wilson, who was placed on injured reserve last month due to a knee injury, will miss the remainder of this season.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn says Wilson has been doing a good job in his rehab, but after talking to the doctors, they will hold him out for the final three games. Wilson is expected to be ready for the Jets offseason program in the spring.
“We just felt it was best for him and for us as a team,” Glenn said about the decision to keep Wilson on IR. “He’s on board and he’s doing really, really well as far as his rehab. We just want to be smart with him because he’s a key cog of what we are doing here and to be able to get him back in the offseason program fully healthy, ready to go, we felt that was the best decision for all of us.”
This will officially end a disappointing season in which there were lofty expectations for Wilson after signing a four-year, $130 million extension during the offseason. He also reunited with his former Ohio State teammate, Justin Fields. But after playing in every game during his first three seasons, Wilson will miss a total of 10 games after being placed on IR for the first time in his career.
Wilson injured his right knee during the Jets’ Week 10 victory against the Browns. This was the same knee he injured during the Week 6 loss to the Broncos, which caused him to miss the next two games. Josh Reynolds (hip), who was the Jets other starting receiver, is also on injured reserve.
The Jets offense has continued to struggle in Wilson’s absence. Since he was placed on IR, the Jets have had three different starting quarterbacks [Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook]. They also have the fewest passing yards in the league after averaging 147 passing yards per game.
Despite playing in only seven games this season, Wilson is second on the Jets in receptions (36) and first in yards (395) and touchdowns (four). In four seasons for the Jets, Wilson has 315 catches for 3,644 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Considering their record (3-11) and there are only three games left in the season, it isn’t a surprise Wilson was shut down for the year. The Jets don’t want to do anything to jeopardize Wilson’s status for the 2026 season when it is expected he will have a new quarterback in place.
The Jets have two first-round and two second-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. They potentially could use that draft capital to trade up to draft either Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza or Oregon’s Dante Moore.
Gang Green will visit New Orleans this Sunday and end the season with a home game against New England and at Buffalo.
