Taylor Swift backup singer battled cancer during Eras Tour

In Taylor Swift’s “The End of an Era” docuseries, backup singer Jeslyn Gorman shares that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the middle of the tour.

In the doc’s third episode, which captures behind-the-scenes moments from Swift’s record-breaking tour, Gorman opens up about receiving the diagnosis mid-tour and making her way back to the stage after treatment.

“So, six months I had to take off and go through chemo, surgery. I had edema. I had, like, skin issues,” Gorman explained. “I usually have all this curly hair. I lost about 75% of my hair. I felt and looked completely different, and just kind of watched my friends on livestreams of the show.”

When Swift learned of Gorman’s diagnosis, she made it clear that the door would always be open, telling her that no matter what, she could return whenever she was ready.

“She came storming in with hugs and crying and just saying, ‘I’m so sorry,’ Gorman recalled of the moment she told Swift. “And her mom [Andrea] said, ‘You just take care of you, and we’ll be here when you’re ready.’”

Gorman later asked her doctor how soon she might be able to return to performing after finishing radiation.

“My doctor said, ‘That night. But you have to get back into shape,’” Gorman recalled.

Another backup singer then revealed that Gorman “literally finished radiation and got on a plane.”

Swift said she was struck by Gorman’s resilience in the face of such a difficult experience.

“I cannot believe that she was back in a few months,” Swift said. “The will to come back and do the hardest show ever. None of us could believe it. I still can’t.”

For Gorman, the effort to return to the stage was worth it — no matter what it took.

“Just coming back to this joy-filled show and these people just emphasized even more how much we’re a family,” she said.

The final two episodes of “The End of an Era” will drop on Disney+ on Dec. 23.
