Ice, ice, baby!
Two intrepid EMTs helped deliver a baby on the side of a Bronx highway in the middle of Friday night’s big snowstorm, according to an FDNY post on X.
EMTs Henry Garcia and Rachel Rosado from FDNY EMT Station 3, serving southeast Bronx and Castle Hill, responded to a call for a woman in labor. They quickly realized, though, the baby was arriving sooner than expected.
As the baby’s head began to emerge, the cool-headed medics pulled over to safely deliver the child on the side of the Bronx River Parkway.
Garcia was experienced in child delivery, already having a few under his FDNY EMT belt. Meanwhile, it was a first for Rosado while on the job. Yet the two partners worked together seamlessly, chalking their teamwork up to their excellent communication.
“This was my first delivery, and communication is what made it possible,” Rosado said. “Once we realized it was an imminent delivery, everything clicked. We bounced off each other and delivered the baby instantly with no complications. My partner guided me through every step, and we worked together to make sure the baby and mother were safe. Despite the circumstances, it turned into a beautiful delivery, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
“This was my third delivery, and I know how important communication was in that moment,” Garcia said. “I told my partner that the second (the woman) felt uncomfortable or noticed crowning, we would pull over. Once that happened, we made the call to pull over on the Bronx River Parkway and deliver the baby right there. Everything went smoothly because we trusted each other and stayed focused on doing what was best for the mother and baby.”
This was the 91st baby delivered by FDNY EMS in New York City in 2025.
“Mom and baby are doing well thanks to clear communication, teamwork and decisive action,” the FDNY said. “Moments like this are a reminder that an EMT’s call to action can happen at any time, and FDNY members are always ready to respond.”
