Chappell Roan walks back tribute to Brigitte Bardot

Chappell Roan takes back what she said about Brigitte Bardot.

The “Pink Pony Club” hitmaker walked back the tribute she made to Bardot after the late sex symbol and screen siren’s death at the age of 91 on Sunday.

“Holy s–t I did not know all that insane s–t Ms. Bardot stood for [obviously] I do not condone this,” Roan, 27, wrote on her Instagram Story on Monday. “Very disappointing to learn.”

Roan’s retraction came shortly after she faced backlash for an earlier message she shared on the platform that mourned the “And God Created Woman” star in the wake of her passing.

“She was my inspiration for red wine supernova,” the “Hot to Go!” singer previously wrote alongside a heart emoji. “Rest in peace Ms. Bardot.”

Roan’s 2023 hit, “Red Wine Supernova,” opened with a line that namedropped the late model.

“She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot,” Roan sings. “She showed me things I didn’t know.”

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer’s fans, however, rushed to social media after Roan’s initial post to condemn the controversial tribute.

“Chappell roan please open brigitte bardot’s wikipedia page,” one person wrote on X.

“Chappell Roan posting that she was inspired by Brigitte Bardot, one of the most infamous racists and homophobes of all time, and people find it shocking?” added another.

“Unironically chappell roan probably should have been questioned some on mentioning brigitte bardot in a positive way in red wine supernova,” commented a third, while a fourth tweeted, “Chappell roan having no clue that brigitte bardot was deeply evil is pretty funny.”

Other fans, however, defended Roan amid the backlash.

“Y’all expect everyone to know every detail of a celeb’s past,” one person noted on X. “Chappell said Brigitte inspired one song because of her pop culture impact, not her racism.”

“I really do not think we need to cancel Chappell Roan for the monstrous crime of not knowing Brigitte Bardot was racist,” shared another.

The Post has reached out to Roan’s reps for further comment.

Bruno Jacquelin of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation confirmed that Bardot died at her home in southern France on Sunday.

Although the late animal rights activist’s cause of death was not provided, Bardot was reportedly hospitalized for nearly three weeks after coming down with a “serious illness” in October.

“I don’t know who is the idiot who started this ‘fake news’ about my disappearance but know that I am doing well and I have no plan on taking my bow,” Bardot wrote on social media amid earlier rumors she was dead. “A word to the wise.”

Despite being one of France’s most famous stars and launching a sensational second career as an animal rights activist, Bardot ultimately fell from public grace in the 1990s when she began to share far-right political stances and anti-immigrant views.

Between 1997 and 2008, Bardot was convicted five times in French courts for inciting racial hatred. She caused controversy again in 2012 when she endorsed far-right leader Marine Le Pen in her failed bid for the French presidency.

Bardot came under fire most recently before her death when, at the height of the #MeToo movement in 2018, she claimed that most actors protesting sexual harassment in the film industry were “hypocritical” and “ridiculous.”

“Many actresses flirt with producers to get a role,” she told Paris Match. “Then when they tell the story afterwards, they say they have been harassed…in actual fact, rather than benefit them, it only harms them.”

“I thought it was nice to be told that I was beautiful or that I had a pretty little ass,” she added. “This kind of compliment is nice.”
