George Clooney and his family are French citizens.
The Academy Award winning movie star, his wife Amal and their children were granted citizenship in France, according to the Guardian. Clooney said in October his 8-year-old twins have a “much better life” in France than they would have in the U.S.
While some American performers headed overseas around the start of 2025 for reasons that appeared to be linked to the nation’s changing political environment, Clooney told Esquire he feels the relative indifference to the children of celebrities by the French will benefit his children.
“I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi,” Clooney said. “I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
Clooney, who now maintains dual citizenship in the U.S. and France, married British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney in 2014. She speaks fluent French, according to the Guardian.
The 64-year-old actor told the New York Times in February that his family still has homes in England and the U.S, but spends most of their time on a farm in France, where they appreciate the privacy.
Celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres indicated they recently left the U.S. in favor of a more liberal cultural climate.
That isn’t the reason Clooney gave for relocating, but he said in a 2020 interview with SIRIUS radio host Howard Stern that he sees the U.S. President as a “dumb goofball” who was desperate to be seen with celebrities like himself. Trump dismissed Clooney as a “second rate movie ‘star’” in a March social media post.
