New York City suburbs received between 1 and 4 inches of snow to open 2026, while hardly half an inch fell within the five boroughs.
The highest regional snowfall total was recorded in Uncasville, Conn., which tallied 3.7 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Norwich and several surrounding areas in New London County recorded at least 3 inches.
In New York, the most snow accumulated on the north shore of Long Island, where 2.1 inches fell in Baiting Hollow. Most of Suffolk County saw between 1 and 2 inches of snow overnight, the National Weather Service said.
Snowfall totals were lower inside the city, where only half an inch was measured in Central Park and hardly any snow fell in Brooklyn, the Bronx or Staten Island. The highest total in Queens was also half an inch at Howard Beach.
Several areas of New Jersey also saw between 1 and 2 inches of snow. Across the state, the flurries came down amid heavy winds, creating dangerous snow squalls early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said.
Though 2026 started with snowfall in the area, the first week of the year was expected to be relatively dry. Meteorologists predicted a high pressure system would remain in the area through Tuesday morning, meaning both temperatures and chances of precipitation would remain low. High temperatures were expected to remain in the low-to-mid 30s throughout the week.
