The man accused of knocking a 72-year-old man unconscious by shoving him into a moving Bronx subway train in an unprovoked attack near Yankee Stadium has been charged with attempted murder, officials said Friday.
Anton Aleshin is also facing assault, harassment, and reckless endangerment charges for the attack on the No. 4 train platform at the 161st St.-Yankee Stadium station just three hours after the ball fell in Times Square New Year’s Day.
Aleshin, 29, is facing the harassment charge because of his victim’s age and the age disparity between the two men, officials said.
The victim was on the Manhattan-bound platform at about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday when Aleshin, 29, crept up behind him and shoved him into the side of a train that had just pulled into the station. The senior bounced off the side of the train and fell back onto the platform, unconscious, according to court documents. He suffered a deep cut to the head from his impact with the train.
The attack was completely unprovoked, cops said. Aleshin didn’t say anything to the senior before he pounced and the two men didn’t know each other, officials said.
Medics rushed the senior to Lincoln Hospital, where he’s expected to recover.
Cops grabbed Aleshin at the scene. He was charged after being questioned by police and gave a statements that led to charges being filed.
The attack was caught on surveillance video, Bronx prosecutors said.
Aleshin lives in Brooklyn, almost 20 miles from where he attacked the senior. This is his first arrest in New York, cops said.
During his arraignment late Thursday, a Bronx Criminal Court judge ordered him held without bail.
An email to Legal Aid, who represented him at his arraignment, was not immediately returned.
