2 killed in early morning wrong-way crash in New Jersey

Two people were killed and two others, including a toddler, were injured in a wrong-way crash in Passaic County early Monday, New Jersey State Police said.

The crash occurred around 2:08 a.m. near exit 54 on Interstate 80 in Totowa Borough, about 19 miles west of Manhattan.

A preliminary investigation determined that a Honda sedan driven by Albin Fermin, 30, of Newark, was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes and collided head-on with a Buick SUV driven by Joanne Furman, 60, who had two passengers: Imani Alexis Furman, 24, and a 2-year-old child. All the passengers in the Buick are from Norwich, Connecticut, though their relationship was unclear.

Fermin and Imani Furman were killed in the crash. Joanna Furman, the Buick driver, sustained serious injuries and the child moderate injuries. Both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions were unknown.

It’s unclear why Fermin was driving in the wrong direction; the crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.

Fermin was a Newark firefighter, according to NBC Connecticut.

Several lanes and an entrance ramp were closed before the roadway was reopened at 7:30 a.m.
