Authorities in Illinois have arrested a suspect in the killings of an Ohio dentist and his wife, who were found shot to death in their Columbus home on the morning of Dec. 30.
Michael David McKee, 39, was booked into jail on Saturday morning on an out-of-state hold and faces two counts of murder, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records. The Chicago man was identified by the Columbus Dispatch as the ex-husband of 39-year-old Monique Tepe.
Monique and Spencer Tepe, 37, were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds at their Weinland Park home around 10 a.m. on Dec. 30, according to the Columbus Division of Police. They were likely shot between 2 and 5 a.m. “in the upstairs of their residence,” officials said.
Their two young children, ages 1 and 4, were also at the home at the time of the slayings, but were not physically harmed. There were no signs of forced entry and and no weapon was recovered at the scene.
Earlier this week, authorities released video footage showing “a person of interest walking in the alley near the Tepe residence” during that time the couple is believed to have been shot.
After receiving “numerous tips from the community” and pursuing leads as part of their investigation, detectives eventually tracked McKee “to a vehicle which arrived just prior to the homicides and left shortly after,” the Columbus Dispatch reported, citing court documents.
The vehicle was later located in Rockford, Illinois, officials said, adding that evidence showed the suspect had access to it before and after the killings.
McKee is reported to be a vascular surgeon with a practice in Rockford, Ill. He attended medical school at Ohio State University, according to the newspaper.
A warrant for his arrest was issued early Saturday. Authorities have not indicated when he’ll be extradited to Ohio.
Court records show McKee and Monique were married in 2015 but divorced but just two years later. They did not share any children. Monique went on marry to Spencer in 2021.
The couple was killed just one month shy of their fifth wedding anniversary, family members told Columbus ABC affiliate WSYX.
