TMZ broke the news over the weekend that Stern was given a citation for soliciting a prostitute at a hotel in Camarillo.

The outlet reported that the actor was not arrested in the case.

In the Golden State, soliciting a prostitute is a misdemeanor and violators can face up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine if convicted.

Stern is best known for playing “Wet Bandit” Marv Murchins in the beloved 1990 Christmas film and its 1992 sequel alongside Joe Pesci and Macaulay Culkin.

In Oct. 2025, Stern was hospitalized for a medical emergency. TMZ reported that he was assessed by firefighters at a residence in Somis, California and transported to a nearby hospital.

After Stern was released from the hospital, his rep told TMZ that the actor was “now doing well.”

Stern has been married to his wife, Laure Mattos, since 1980 and they have three children together: daughters Ella, 36, and Sophie, 40, and son Henry, 43, who is a California State Senator.

“I made enough money that I didn’t have to work,” he told People in 2024. “I made enough money and I’m kind of frugal … I bought the house in cash. I bought the cars in cash. I bought everything straight up because as an artist, I never knew if [I was] going to make any more bread. And I said to my wife, ‘How much money do I need to sock in the bank so that we can live off the interest and so that I don’t have to work?’ She said, ‘We hit it.’ “

Stern also noted that his decision to begin “stepping away” from Hollywood was to disconnect from the “overwhelming” reality of being in the spotlight.

“At this point … I love being in nature. I love being away,” he shared. “I love my solitude and I love being able to focus on what I’m making. So the farm world is a great place for me.”
