Newark worker killed loading steel beams onto truck

A Newark worker was killed on Wednesday when a steel beam fell on him as he was loading a truck.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on the 100-block of Raymond Boulevard, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

First responders found the man unresponsive at the scene and and he was later pronounced dead.

During an investigation into the fatal accident, police learned the man accidentally fell off the truck while loading the beams, “before one of the beams fell on him,” Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said in a press release.

The victim’s identity has not been disclosed.

The incident comes roughly 10 months after a Newark construction worker was killed in an elevator shaft accident.

Fall-related injuries are the second-most-common workplace death in New Jersey, according to state government statistics. Fatalities involving “transportation and material moving” account for 30% of those deaths.
