A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday for a fatal collision that claimed the life of a Queens motorcyclist on the Long Island Expressway, cops said.
The teen suspect, whose name is being withheld due to his age, is charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault and leaving the scene of an accident without reporting the Sept. 26 crash that killed 30-year-old Luis Mareno, according to police.
The suspect was only 15 when he rear-ended Mareno’s 2020 Triumph RS motorcycle around 12:40 a.m while driving a black 2019 Mitsubishi SUV west on the expressway near exit 22A in Corona, cops said.
Police said the crash sent Mareno flying off his bike and into the path of a 2015 Toyota Sienna, which struck him as it traveled in the same direction.
Mareno’s motorcycle then spun across three lanes, striking an unoccupied 2017 Infinite Q50 stopped on the shoulder of the expressway, cops said.
Mareno died at the scene. He lived in Corona.
“He was a quiet, nice person,” a relative who declined to give his name said. “Very loved.”
Anyone under the age of 16 cannot legally drive in New York State, even if holding a permit or license issued by another state, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
