A woman was killed in a hit-and-run after stepping off an NJ Transit bus in Caldwell Friday night, authorities said Saturday.
Caldwell cops found 56-year-old Sharon Thomas unconscious on the 400 block of Bloomfield Ave. around 6:30 p.m., according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Caldwell Police Department.
Thomas was taken to Mountainside Hospital, where she was pronounced dead less than a hour later.
Witnesses told police that Thomas was crossing the street after exiting the bus when she was struck by a still-unidentified vehicle. The driver allegedly stopped and got out, looked at Thomas lying in the street, then “returned to the vehicle and fled the scene,” officials said.
As she laid in the roadway, Thomas was struck a second time by a different vehicle, whose driver pulled over and remained on the scene, according to prosecutors.
No additional details were immediately available, police said Saturday, noting the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. All calls will remain confidential, officials said.
