An upstate New York man and his adult son were arrested on multiple charges after state police seized dozens of guns, high-capacity magazines, illegal drugs and weapons like daggers and brass knuckles from their Cortland County home, officials said Tuesday.
Clayton J. Carley, 26, and Jeffrey C. Carley, 60, were arrested on Jan. 14 after state police found an apparent stolen dirt bike for sale online.
The off-road motorcycle — positively identified by its owner “due to numerous unique characteristics visible in the online posting” — had been reported stolen in the summer of 2024 during a burglary in Oswego County, about 80 miles north of Cortland, according to New York State Police.
On Jan. 12, a seller in the Town of Homer, in western Cortland, listed the dirt bike on Facebook Marketplace. State troopers identified the seller as the younger Carley and interviewed him at his home, but he was reportedly “evasive, dismissive and uncooperative.” Investigators said he also gave “intentionally false information regarding the sale.”
Last Wednesday, authorities executed a search warrant at the Carleys’ home and recovered the alleged stolen dirt bike and dozens of guns — including more than 40 rifles and shotguns, three handguns, five assault weapons and a loaded short-barreled shotgun — as well as high-capacity magazines, two daggers, a baton and brass knuckles.
Troopers also found more than $5,000 in cash, as well as five ounces of psilocybin mushrooms, six pounds of concentrated cannabis, 18 pounds of cannabis flower and more than a dozen mature marijuana plants, officials said.
Police determined the dirt bike had been sold to a person in the Buffalo area. The buyer was contacted and later surrendered the motorcycle to the New York State Police barracks in Hastings.
Both father and son were arrested on multiple charges, including numerous counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
They were processed at the NYSP station in Homer and transported to the Cortland County Jail for arraignment.
