1 killed, 1 injured in L.I. hit-and-run crash

A hit-and-run driver struck two men who were changing a flat tire on a Long Island roadway, killing one and seriously injuring the other, police said Friday.

The two victims, whose identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, were hit Thursday shortly before 7 p.m. while tending to their vehicle on the side of the road near 1180 William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, Suffolk County police said in a news release.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with undisclosed injuries described by police as “serious.”

Their car was impounded for a safety check, police said.

The vehicle that struck the two men fled the scene. Detectives with the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit believe the car is a black Honda with front- and passenger-side damage.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-655, submit a tip to Crime Stoppers of Suffolk County, or call its hotline at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls can remain confidential, officials said.
