Bad Bunny’s “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” became the first ever all-Spanish-language record to win Album of the Year at the Grammys on Sunday night.
The Puerto Rico-born artist, whose legal name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, had already made history for earning nominations in the top three categories, though Song of the Year and Record of the Year went to Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar.
“I wanna dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams,” he said during his acceptance speech, most of which he delivered in Spanish.
In addition to Album of the Year, Bad Bunny also won Best Musica Urbana Album and Best Global Music Performance for “EoO.”
“Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say: ICE out,” he said to massive applause during his first speech. “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans.”
“Debi Tirar Mas Fotos,” released in January 2025, was widely acclaimed and led in part to Bad Bunny headlining the Super Bowl halftime show next week. It was only the second Spanish-language album ever nominated for Album of the Year. Bad Bunny also scored the first nomination with “Un Verano Sin Ti” back in 2023.
“Debi Tirar Mas Fotos,” which means “I should have taken more photos” in English, leaned into Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rican heritage, from the format of the song titles to the lyrical focus on his pride in the island. He also set up a 31-show concert residency in San Juan, which ran from July to September.
“Bad Bunny returned to his beloved Puerto Rico, forging a deeper connection to his community and producing his most profound statement yet,” Pitchfork wrote of the album. “[‘Debi Tirar Mas Fotos’] is a bold declaration — a groundbreaking testament to his evolved artistry and vision for the future of música urbana.”
The album was also recognized at the Latin Grammys in November, with Bad Bunny winning five trophies among 12 nominations, including Album of the Year.
“There are many ways to show patriotism and defend our land — we choose music,” he said in Spanish during that acceptance speech.
On Sunday, Bad Bunny beat out a wide-open field to win Album of the Year, including Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX,” Tyler, The Creator’s “Chromakopia” and Lady Gaga’s “Mayhem,” which won Best Pop Vocal Album.
Lamar is the only person to be nominated for Album of the Year for five straight releases, but he still has not won the category. However, he won five other Grammys on Sunday night and has 27 in his career, the most of any rapper in the history of the awards.
