A Maryland high school student was charged with attempted murder and other offenses in the Monday afternoon shooting of a fellow student at the school in Rockville, authorities said.
Kahlil White-Villatoro, 16, is accused of shooting and wounding another 16-year-old boy inside Thomas S. Wootton High School shortly after 2 p.m., the Rockville Police Department said in a news release.
The victim, who was not publicly identified, was found in a hallway with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, officials said late Monday.
The suspect, identified as White-Villatoro, was arrested near the school shortly after the incident.
On Tuesday, investigators said they recovered a Polymer80 9 mm handgun believed to have been used in the shooting and announced charges against the suspect.
White-Villatoro is charged with attempted second-degree murder, assault and multiple firearms-related offenses, including possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, officials said, adding that he was charged as an adult.
He was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center’s Central Processing Unit in Rockville, where he awaits a bond hearing, police said.
The school was placed on lockdown “as a precaution,” and students were later transported to a reunification site around 4:30 p.m., Montgomery County police said. Classes resumed Tuesday, but students had the option to stay home through Wednesday, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor and Wootton Principal Dr. Joseph Bostic said in a letter to families.
Wootton High School enrolls about 1,900 students. It is ranked No. 3 among Maryland high schools by U.S. News & World Report in its 2025-2026 rankings.
