Authorities searching for a 63-year woman missing since last month have found female remains in a wooded area on the east end of Long Island, police said.
The discovery was made on Wednesday in Manorville, on Connecticut Avenue, south of River Road, at 3:21 p.m., according to a press release from the Suffolk County Police Department. Per a preliminary investigation, detectives suspect the cause of death “to be criminal in nature.”
Police said the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office is working to identify the body and determine the exact cause of her death. Few other details about the body were provided.
The remains were discovered amid a search for Kathleen Trent, who disappeared more than two weeks ago. Her son reported her missing on January 29, telling authorities he had not heard from his mother since two days prior, on the evening of January 27, News 12 reported. She was last seen near her home in Riverhead, about six miles from where the body was found in Suffolk County on Wednesday afternoon.
Trent is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 140 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes, police said.
An investigation into the matter is ongoing. Authorities have asked anyone with information to reach out to the Riverhead Police Department or its confidential tip line.
