Ice chunk falls on tracks, stalling G train service

The thaw from weeks of subzero temperatures froze travel between Brooklyn and Queens Wednesday morning, after a chunk of ice fell from the ceiling above the southbound tube of the subway’s Crosstown Line, tripping the emergency brakes on a G train and partially suspending service for nearly an hour.

Sources tell the Daily News that the ice fell onto the tracks just north of the Metropolitan Ave. Station in Williamsburg sometime before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Shortly afterward, a southbound G train entering the station hit the frozen obstruction, tripping the train’s emergency brake.

Upon inspection, the train continued onward, undamaged, sources said.

But Crosstown Line service remained partially suspended until shortly before 11:20 a.m., with some Queens-bound trains turning around at Bedford-Nostrand until work crews cleared the ice.
