Two people were killed and seven others wounded in a shooting on a street in Richmond, Va., early Saturday, authorities said.
Genesis Jones, 23, and Dominic Jackson, 42, were identified as the deceased victims, according to local CBS affiliate WTVR. The wounded victims were not immediately named. One person was initially hospitalized in critical condition, while the other six suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
No suspects have been arrested or publicly identified in the incident. Police said Sunday they were sorting through a mountain of evidence.
“A lot of forensic material was recovered here,” Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said. “Over 50 cartridge casings were recovered, multiple firearms. We towed six cars. And we’re hoping to get some more help from the community. People have been sending me videos, and we’re giving those to our investigators.”
Cops found two guns at the scene and believe the incident involved at least two shooters. Investigators said it started as a fight in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom entertainment district and spiraled out of control.
“If you’re carrying firearms, you can’t engage in a normal fight because it escalates like it did when one person starts shooting, multiple people start shooting,” Edwards said. “That’s what we saw tonight.”
Jones’ family said she was an innocent bystander celebrating her brother’s birthday in the neighborhood when she was caught in the crossfire.
“I was proud to be her big brother,” Zekiah Jones told local TV station WWBT. “I was proud to have her as a little sister. She will be forever missed and forever loved. And we’re going to make sure that she’s going to be forever remembered because she was a once in a lifetime character.”
