Hundreds of flights were delayed into and out of LaGuardia and Kennedy airports on Wednesday, but only a few dozen were canceled as the transit hubs attempted to resume service following the blizzard that began the week.
At JFK, 31 departing flights and 10 arriving flights were canceled by early afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Meanwhile, more than 270 total flights were delayed.
At LaGuardia, 19 inbound and outbound flights had been canceled, while more than 300 total flights had been delayed. Newark Airport had only scant cancellations and fewer than 100 total delays.
While less than ideal, Wednesday’s travel situation was a massive upgrade on Monday and Tuesday, when air travel nearly ground to a halt and thousands of flights were canceled.
On Tuesday, more than 45% of flights out of the three major airports were canceled, and about one-third of incoming flights were called off. One day earlier, it was nearly impossible to get in or out of the city by air, with more than 90% of flights canceled, including nearly every one in and out of LaGuardia.
Mass transit also largely resumed on the ground, with NJ Transit and Metro-North trains running normal schedules on Wednesday. The Long Island Rail Road also resumed standard service, though the MTA said residual delays would likely continue to impact travel times.
Nearly two feet of snow buried the five boroughs on Sunday and Monday. According to the National Weather Service, 22.5 inches fell at LaGuardia and 20.1 inches fell at JFK. Newark Airport got 27.2 inches.
