Prince William’s dynamic with his father, King Charles III, has drastically “shifted” since the conversations of succession has come into play, according to a report.
As the eldest son of the monarch, 76, and the late Princess Diana, it’s no surprise that the Prince of Wales is gearing up to take over the reins as future king.
However, their relationship has reportedly suffered some tension in recent months, palace sources claimed to Us Weekly.
“The dynamics have shifted,” an insider told the outlet, with another adding that the sovereign “has wanted to be the monarch for decades.”
“Even though he’s battling cancer, he’s not letting that get in the way of his desire to be successful on the throne or a dynamic leader,” the source said.
Behind the scenes, it’s reported that William, 42, is already preparing “for when his ascension happens.”
“Like his father, he takes being a success in the royal role very seriously,” the insider said, adding that when it comes to the topic of succession within the Firm, the conversation is a “sensitive” one.
“There’s occasional tension,” the source said, adding that William is likely in talks about transitioning titles and responsibilities, as well as the current state of the UK government to ensure “a smooth transition.”
Elsewhere, palace insiders have claimed that royal staffers began drawing up succession plans after the king’s coronation in May 2023.
The plans were fast-tracked earlier this year after Charles revealed his cancer diagnosis in February, the source adds.
“The Palace sprung into action,” the source told the outlet. “William and his team have agreed on what they will focus on at the start of his reign and funeral plans for his father.”
“For the most part, Charles is doing well, ” the source said of the king, but adds that there are still “some concerns, and he knows his reign will be up soon.”
The Post has reached out to Buckingham and Kensington Palaces for comment.
Still, no matter how much strain William and his father’s relationship has had in recent months, it’s nothing compared to the struggle Charles’ relationship with Prince Harry has endured.
When it comes to the question of whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will ever return to the royal fold, it appears as though a royal return is not on the cards.
A source claims there’s a “mutual desire” between Harry and his estranged father for a reconciliation, however the insider claims that William “is less inclined to bring Harry back into the royal fold.”
