MAGA filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza finally came clean about part of his thoroughly debunked “2000 Mules” documentary being misleading.
D’Souza’s confession came in the form of an apology to Georgia man Mark Andrews, whom the movie accused of illegally dropping multiple ballots into an election box to help rig the 2020 presidential election against Donald Trump.
“I owe this individual, Mark Andrews, an apology,” the 63-year-old filmmaker posted on his website Monday. “While I do not believe Mr. Andrews was ever identified by the film or book, I am sorry for any harm he believes he and his family has suffered as a result of ‘2000 Mules.’”
While Andrews isn’t mentioned by name in “2000 Mules,” he and his family claim they began receiving threats after the release of the conspiracy theory flick and filed lawsuits against its distributor and D’Souza. Salem Media, which published the discredited film and book, issued an apology to Andrews in May and took both properties out of circulation.
The movie shows Andrews legally mailing in his family’s ballots at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is legal.
“What you are seeing is a crime,” D’Souza falsely claims in the film. “These are fraudulent votes.”
In his apology to Andrews, D’Souza continues to insist “the underlying premise” of his film — that “data revealed highly suspicious patterns of certain cell phones, which were recorded in the location of ten or more dropboxes” — holds true.
There’s no indication that claim points to fraud in the 2020 election.
Trump Administration officials released a statement after the 2020 election declaring it “the most secure in American history.”
When asked by Congressional investigators in 2022 if “2000 Mules” was credible, Trump’s former Attorney General Bill Barr mockingly called the film “singularly unimpressive.”
D’Souza became a felon in 2014 after pleading guilty to making illegal campaign contributions in other people’s names. He was pardoned by Trump in 2018.
D’Souza claims his apology to Andrews isn’t part of a legal settlement.
