Brian Cox accuses ‘Succession’ co-star of causing ‘hostility’ for the cast

The Roys are always at odds.

Brian Cox is speaking out (again) about Jeremy Strong’s method acting approach — this time, implying that it caused an even bigger negative impact on the “Succession” cast than initially believed.

“He was wonderful to act with. I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting,” Cox, 78, explained during an interview with The Guardian, which published on Dec. 7. “He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.”

Cox and Strong, 45, played father-son duo Logan and Kendall Roy, respectively, on the HBO series. The drama won six Emmys for their fourth and final season, which aired in May 2023.

The Scottish actor went on to note that a co-star who is in character all the time is “not good for the ensemble.”

“It creates hostility,” he added.

Cox never spoke with Strong “in the way [he] would like to have talked to him” about his method acting at the time, explaining that “it’s a very emotive subject for people who follow the Strasberg line.”

The “That Christmas” star, however, has given his opinion on Strong on multiple occasions since the show wrapped.

“He’s a very good actor. And the rest of the ensemble is all OK with this. But knowing a character and what the character does is only part of the skill set,” he told Town & Country in February 2023. “It’s f–king annoying. Don’t get me going on it.”

In 2021, he told the New Yorker: “I’ve worked with intense actors before. It’s a particularly American disease, I think, this inability to separate yourself off while you’re doing the job. “The result that Jeremy gets is always pretty tremendous. I just worry about what he does to himself. I worry about the crises he puts himself through in order to prepare.”

He’d go on to even discuss Strong during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

“He does get obsessed with the work. And I worry about what it does to him, because if you can’t separate yourself — because you’re dealing with all of this material every day. You can’t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out,” he said that same year.

In March 2023, he apologized and admitted to Jimmy Fallon that he’s been “a little harsh” toward Strong.

“Succession” also starred Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Friedman and J. Smith-Cameron.
