A private funeral service for healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was scheduled to take place Monday according to a report by NBC Monday morning.
No further information was provided to NBC News about where or when the funeral for the executive shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Wednesday was to take place. The 50-year-old father of two resided in Maple Grove, Minn. He was killed before the start of an investors meeting for UnitedHealthcare near Central Park.
His shooting began a massive manhunt that may have concluded Monday with the police questioning of Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Penn.
Police were tipped off by a McDonald’s worker who thought the 26-year-old “person of interest” resembled the ubiquitous photos splashed across television station and posted online.
It’s suspected the shooter was motivated by a distaste for insurance industry practices. Evidence from the crime scene included bullets with the terms “deny,” “defend” and “depose” etched onto their casings, according to officials.
Thompson was named chief executive officer at UnitedHealthcare in 2021 after 17 years with the insurance juggernaut. A statement announcing the promotion credited his “experience, relationships and values” for his success with the insurance provider.
Thompson was known to keep a low profile despite a 2023 salary of more than $10 million. His shooting was condemned by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar who called it “horrifying and shocking.”
Gov. Tim Walz called his death a setback for the community.
“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” he posted online.
Both politicians offered condolences to his family, including his wife Paulette, from whom he lived separately, according to the Wall Street Journal.
UnitedHealthcare said it was “deeply saddened and shocked” to learn of its leader’s death in a statement calling Thompson “a friend” to his colleagues.
