One person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a workplace shooting at a USPS processing facility in Texas on Monday night.
The Postal Inspection Service said the incident happened at around 9:45 p.m. at a facility in Missouri City, about 20 miles southwest of Houston.
Employee Kevin J. Hines, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fellow employee Derrick Lott was taken into custody and has since been charged with murder. The 24-year-old suspect remained in custody at Fort Bend County Jail on Tuesday.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but an investigation is ongoing.
“I can confirm that there was one individual involved. That individual is in custody and the community is safe,” Dana Carter, a postal inspector in the Houston division, told ABC13. “At this time, there is one victim. That person is deceased, and again, this is an active investigation. We are going to continue to work through that process as we get ready to notify next of kin.”
Carter added that it’s unlikely the investigation would delay mail delivery.
“The Postal Service is deploying contingency plans designed to work around such situations,” the agency said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor conditions and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the timely and efficient processing of all mail and packages.”
