Waterbury teen charged with attempted murder in CT hit-and-run

Police in Waterbury, Conn., said Thursday that a hit-and-run that injured two women had been intentional, and arrested the teen driver for attempted murder.

Melany Camanero, 19, of Waterbury, turned herself in on Thursday and was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, two counts of first-degree assault, evading responsibility resulting in serious physical injury, failure to drive in the proper lane and operating a motor vehicle with a disqualified license, police said in a statement.

She was being held in lieu of $1 million bond and scheduled for arraignment Thursday in Waterbury Superior Court.

Police did not identify the injured 21- and 22-year-old women but said Camanero and the victims knew each other.

The 22-year-old was initially in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after the October incident, police said. Though she remains hospitalized, her condition is now stable. The 21-year-old was hospitalized in stable condition and has since been released.

The women were found wounded on Oct. 10 at around 8 p.m. when police responded to a call of a traffic incident involving two pedestrians, police said. Their initial investigation showed that a vehicle had hit not only the two women but two other vehicles nearby before coming to a stop. The driver then fled the scene on foot.

Police later determined the driver to be Camanero and obtained a warrant for her arrest.
