John Lennon’s sons recently spent time at an unlikely place.
Sean Ono Lennon and Julian Lennon were pictured at The Dakota, the New York City apartment building where their famous father was fatally shot in front of in Dec. 1980.
Over the weekend, Julian, 61 — the late Beatles star’s eldest child, whom he welcomed with ex-wife Cynthia Lennon — shared several rare photos on Instagram of himself and Sean, 49, at their late dad’s former home.
Lennon had Sean with his widow, Ono, in 1975.
“A Goodnight kiss for my brother, after spending the evening with him, having a lil dinner & chatting the night away, at The Dakota. Something we rarely get to do…Thankful,” Julian captioned the black-and-white pictures.
In one image, Julian was seen kissing his little brother’s cheek as the latter smiled at the camera. In another photo, Sean held a bowl of noodles as the pair enjoyed takeout.
The final picture was a set of wooden doors, presumably at The Dakota.
John and Ono, 91, moved into the apartment building in 1973 and, at one point, owned five units in the Upper West Side complex, but it wasn’t their primary residence.
According to The New York Times, the Beatles star and his wife used the 6,000-square-foot living space as their guest home, a storage space and a studio for Oko.
Lennon was famously shot and killed by Mark David Chapman in front of The Dakota when he was 40 years old.
In Dec. 1977, the musician took a memorable photo with his sons at The Dakota for the holidays.
Julian never moved into the NYC building, but Sean grew up there. While living at The Dakota, Sean became close with his neighbor, Grammy-winning singer Roberta Flack.
“I was very blessed that I grew up with the coolest neighbor in the world,” Sean shared in “Roberta,” a documentary about Flack’s life.
“At first, I didn’t even think of Roberta as this incredible artist and musician — she was just this really cool neighbor. We used to call her Aunt Roberta, and we were very close.”
The singer recalled Sean’s close relationship with his father.
“Sean loved his dad. There was a lot of holding hands and looking up, and a lot of holding hands and looking down,” Flack said during an interview in 2017.
Chapman murdered Lennon on December 8, 1980. He had created a list of famous people he wanted to kill, including Elizabeth Taylor and Johnny Carson, but ultimately decided on the Beatles band member.
Chapman claimed Lennon was a “phony” and that killing him would make him famous.
He flew to New York and waited for two days outside The Dakota. On the day of his death, Chapman met Lennon, who signed his album “Double Fantasy.” Later that night, when Lennon and Ono returned home, he fatally shot him in the back.
Chapman pled guilty to second-degree murder in June 1981. He was sentenced to 20 years to life for killing Lennon. He was repeatedly denied release despite becoming eligible for parole in 2000.
