Man found dead in Queens apartment fire

A man was found dead after a fire tore through an apartment in Queens on Wednesday, officials said.

Police were called to the apartment on 79th St. near Astoria Blvd. North in Astoria for a wellness check around 2:40 p.m., officials said.

When they arrived, smoke was pouring from a third-floor apartment. The FDNY was called to the three-story building, where firefighters discovered a mattress ablaze and the man’s body nearby, according to sources.

Officials were investigating if the man was killed by the fire or died before it began. His name was not immediately released.

It took 60 members of the FDNY from 12 different units to knock down the flames, which were under control by just after 3 p.m., officials said.

Fire marshals were continuing to investigate the blaze early Wednesday evening.
