Carrie Underwood defends performing at Trump’s inauguration

Carrie Underwood, who has long been mum on her political stance, is defending her decision to perform at Donald Trump’s second inauguration.

The 41-year-old country star told People and AP in a statement Monday that she is “honored” to take part when the former president is sworn in again on Jan. 20.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” read Underwood’s statement. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Many fans of Underwood, who in May will celebrate 20 years since she won the fourth season of “American Idol,” were less diplomatic in response to the news.

“Don’t forget to carve a swastika into his leather seats girl!” influencer Matt Bernstein commented on Underwood’s latest Instagram post.

“As a longtime fan that’s been to all of your concerts … I’m heartbroken at your decision to perform next week. I thought you stood for love & acceptance, not hate & judgement,” commented Walmart marketing exec Justin Breton.

“If george michael was alive he would remove you as a follower,” said artist Michael James Schneider.

The “Y.M.C.A.”-chanting Village People, whose most famous song has long been a staple in the LGBTQ community, will also perform at the inauguration. The disco group addressed the decision in a Facebook statement to fans and media.

“We know this wont [sic] make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” began the message. “Our song ‘Y.M.C.A.’ is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.”
