New Yorkers woke up Monday to below-freezing temperatures, icy roads and a slower commute — and the worst of the big chill doesn’t even start until Tuesday.
The snow that blanketed the city on Sunday topped no more than 3.6 inches citywide, with just 1.6 inches recorded in Central Park. But it came with a blast of arctic air that quickly lead to icy conditions, with speed restrictions on the George Washington and Bayonne bridges and scores of delayed and cancelled flights at area airport.
Increasingly cold temperatures are expected Tuesday, when the high will be just 19 degrees forecasters say. Temperatures aren’t expected to rise above freezing in the city until Saturday.
By 7 a.m. Monday, the temperature was 20 degrees at LaGuardia Airport, with 13 mph winds that made it feel like seven degrees.
On Sunday, there were delays at LaGuardia of up to 90 minutes, with 243 flights cancelled. At JFK Airport, the delays were even longer, up to 2 1/2 hours, with 142 flights cancelled and almost 300 more delayed. Delay and cancellation information for early Monday was not immediately available.
There were several delays in the subway system, though it wasn’t immediately clear if they were weather-related. Regardless, Monday is expected to be a light travel day as the nation celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Meanwhile, 838 customers were without power in the city, according to Con Ed — including 522 in Brooklyn. The utility estimates power will be restored by 10:30 a.m.
