Actor Francisco San Martin, of “Days of Our Lives” and “Jane the Virgin” fame, died by suicide last week.
The 39-year-old Spanish performer died at his Los Angeles County home on Jan. 16, with the coroner’s office ruling hanging as the official cause of death, according to Deadline.
The Montana-raised San Martin began his entertainment career after he returned to his native Spain in his teens and took up modeling.
He made his U.S. screen debut in 2010, when he parlayed a bit part as a patient into the role of presumed thief-turned-investigator Dario Hernandez on the NBC soap. He appeared on “Days” for 59 episodes over six months and spoke to Afterbuzz TV’s Spotlight about the coldness he encountered on set, due to what he could only imagine was a high “turnover” of actors.
His “Days of Our Lives” stint ended in 2011 and Jordi Vilasuso took over the role in 2016.
San Martin appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s 2013 Emmy-winning Liberace biopic, “Behind the Candelabra.” The TV flick, which starred Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, won 11 of the 15 Emmys for which it was nominated.
In 2017, San Martin returned to his soap roots when he appeared as Mateo on more than a dozen episodes of CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful.” That year, he also started a recurring role as Fabian on The CW’s hit satirical telenovela, “Jane the Virgin.”
San Martin last appeared on-screen in two short films in 2022, “Hotter Up Close” and “Dot.”
“Days of Our Lives” co-star Camila Banus, who played Dario’s sister Gabi, reportedly memorialized San Martin in an Instagram Story.
“Pepe, what can I say about but I love you and rest in peace, my friend,” she wrote, according to multiple outlets. “Love you mucho mucho mucho. I wish I had told you more.”
