Woman fatally struck by NJ Transit train near Rutherford station

A woman was fatally struck by a NJ Transit train in northeast New Jersey early Wednesday morning, officials said.

The woman, who hasn’t been identified, was hit near Rutherford Station in Bergen County around 1:30 a.m.

Train No. 41, running on the Main-Bergen County Line, had departed Hoboken around 12:39 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Port Jervis, N.Y. at 3:15 a.m.

Shortly after the incident, the transit agency sent an alert to customers announcing that “due to a pedestrian strike near Rutherford” the train had been canceled.

In a statement shared with the media, NJ Transit later said that the train had “struck and fatally injured an adult female pedestrian just west of Rutherford Station at Paterson Avenue.”

The train was carrying 22 passengers and crew, and no other injuries were reported, an agency spokesperson told Patch Ridgewood-Glen Rock.

The incident is being investigated by NJ Transit police. No additional information was available Wednesday morning.

NJ Transit, the nation’s third-largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit, offers services to customers in New Jersey and parts of New York and Pennsylvania.
