NJ city councilman pulled gun on tow truck driver, cops say

A New Jersey city councilman pulled a gun on a tow truck driver after a relative’s car was towed, according to police.

Cops said Orange councilman Kerry Coley threatened the unnamed tow truck driver during an incident back in October, News 12 New Jersey reported Thursday. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office did not release details on the charges against Coley.

Coley surrendered to police on Monday and spent a night in jail before he was released, according to the New Jersey Globe. He was banned from having any contact with the tow truck driver and placed on low-level monitoring.

“The case will likely be presented to the grand jury,” a prosecutor’s spokesperson told the Globe.

Coley represents Orange’s East Ward on the city council. He was first elected to the position in 2014, and his current term expires in 2026. Coley served four years in the Army and spent more than 20 years with the Orange Police Department before retiring and joining the city council.

In 2016, Coley ran for mayor of Orange and was accused of pulling up campaign yard signs of his opponent, Dwayne Warren. Warren, the incumbent candidate at the time, won the election.

During the race, Coley’s internal affairs file from his time with the Orange Police Department was leaked online and promoted by a PAC with ties to Warren, who is still the mayor. At the time, he denied any connection to the link.
