The “Yellowstone” spinoffs keep on riding.
Variety reported Wednesday that CBS is in “early discussions” to make a procedural series starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.
Plot details are under wraps and no deals are in place for the potential show yet, according to the outlet.
Deadline reported that the series would likely explore Kayce’s background as a Navy SEAL.
Like “Yellowstone,” the spinoff would be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios.
The Post has reached out to CBS and Grimes, 41, for comment.
Grimes played the youngest son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton on all five seasons of “Yellowstone,” which finished its six-year run on the Paramount Network in December.
In the series finale, Kayce sells the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation for $1.25 per acre. Kayce kept part of the ranch to live on with his family.
Before the final episode aired, Grimes told Esquire “it was time” for the Western series to come to an end.
“Seven years is a long time to do anything, and I had never played a character for more than a few months before. I’ve loved all of it,” the actor said. “But there is a part of it that sees that there’s a finality to it.”
Grimes added, “There’s always talks of spin-offs. I’d do it [but] I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends. Kayce wants to cowboy and be happy with his family. He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega ranch that isn’t sustainable in today’s times. He wants his little slice of heaven. It’s that simple.”
His remarks came after it was confirmed that Costner, 70, was officially exiting the series for the second half of Season 5 after rumors of tension between him and creator Taylor Sheridan.
Another “Yellowstone” spinoff starring Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler is supposedly in the works as well.
In Dec. 2024, Deadline reported that the spinoff will be set in the same present-day time frame as the flagship series, and feature other cast members from the show.
Reilly, 47, appeared to confirm the news by replying “True” to a fan who asked on Instagram if the rumors about the spinoff were accurate.
“Yellowstone” has spawned two other offshoots, “1883” and “1923,” which chronicle the Dutton family’s history before the present day.
Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox have also joined “The Madison,” which will reportedly be “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
