Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker’s son has found the wonderful world of acting.
The “Inspector Gadget” alum, 63, revealed that he and the “Sex and The City” star’s oldest child, James, is following in his parents’ footsteps.
“I think he is gonna try, yeah. He’s very smart,” Broderick told People on Monday. “He has a really good education too, so he has a lot of different things he can do, but I think right now he likes acting.”
Both the actor and Parker, 60, have taken a hands-on approach to helping their 22-year-old son find his footing.
“Well, I’ll give advice if I’m asked, [but] my wife is with him when he does auditions. It’s self-tape nowadays and she’ll read with him and tell him, ‘It’s not good,’” Broderick teased. “And you know I will too. We definitely [support him] but only if he wants to.”
The couple, who tied the knot in 1997, are also parents to twins Tabitha and Marion, 15.
Without naming names, Broderick shared that one of his daughters is “repelled” by the thought of acting.
“If you say, ‘What about you?’ She says ‘Nope, no absolutely not,’” the patriarch explained.
There are no hard feelings, though, as both Broderick and Parker have spoken candidly throughout the years about wanting their children to come into their own.
“Our lives are unpredictable, and we’re not always here when we want to be,” Parker told People in 2018. “We can’t always do drop-off and pick-up. But I’m proud that our children talk to us in the way they do. I’m glad they’re curious people.
“Sometimes I just sit on the stairs because they’re all in the kitchen, eating all the food, and I listen,” she said of James and his friends. “And I’m so charmed by their conversation. I’m so happy with the young man he’s becoming.”
When it comes to the twins, Parker revealed at the time, “They have different interests.”
“They’re really devoted to each other, but they’ll also say, ‘I need time away from her.’ Tabitha can play by herself for hours. Loretta always needs to be checking in. They go to different schools. That’s Tabitha’s idea.”
The “And Just Like That…” star also opened up about the key to her and Broderick’s longstanding union, expressing, “I think marriage has a lot of vitality. If you’re fortunate, it’s like this dazzling organism.”
Meanwhile, in February, Broderick and James made their father-son acting debut on the CBS drama “Elsbeth.”
“What a thrill it was to work side by side with my dad, who also happens to be my favorite actor!” James said to People in January. “The whole experience of working on ‘Elsbeth’ was beyond exciting and I am very grateful to the producers for giving me this opportunity.”
Broderick echoed James’ sentiments, sharing, “I was so proud and happy to work with my son.”
The Hollywood vet portrayed Lawrence Grey, who worked to get Manhattan’s elite kids into their dream schools by whatever means necessary. After murdering to keep his scheme going, Clay (played by James) is left to keep the company going.
Prior to starring in “Elsbeth,” James, who studied theater at Brown University, had a small part in the 2024 Apple TV+ thriller “Lady in the Lake.”
Although he worked with his dad, fans shouldn’t expect to see James on “And Just Like That…” anytime soon.
As Parker told E! News in October, when asked if her eldest would ever make a cameo on the HBO show, she stated, “Not mine.”
