A gunman who fatally shot three people and wounded three others Tuesday in Fredericksburg, Va., remained at large into the evening as police combed a wooded area near a town house complex where the shooting erupted.
The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a shooting around 5:30 p.m., the department said.
“Upon arrival, deputies found multiple subjects shot,” the sheriff’s office said in a media release. The three wounded were taken to area hospitals, though police did not reveal their condition.
“This is an active and fluid investigation,” the sheriff’s office said. “At this time, we do not know the ages of any of the victims. No suspects have been apprehended at this time of this release. We ask the public to please stay clear of the area.”
The shooting erupted at a townhouse complex about 65 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., in Spotsylvania County.
Deputies combed the surrounding neighborhood and a nearby wooded area searching for suspects, according to footage from Commonwealth Media Group.
“There’s dozens upon dozens of officers out actively looking for suspects and preserving the crime scene,” said Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Major Elizabeth Scott.
