A federal investigation related to an MS-13 case on Long Island has uncovered human remains at the Underhill Preserve in Jericho.
FBI agents and Nassau County police officers made the grisly discovery on Wednesday, as they scoured the 81-acre nature preserve for a victim of the notorious gang, NBC New York reported, citing a senior law enforcement official.
Brian Nevin, a spokesperson for Oyster Bay, confirmed officials were notified a body had been recovered, but said Thursday no other updates had been provided.
The remains were not identified and the cause of death was not immediately clear.
The FBI in a statement confirmed it’s conducting investigative activity at the Underhill Preserve,” located near interchange of routes 106 and 25, not far from Jericho High School. Despite the law enforcement presence, both the high school and middle school, which are located on the same grounds, have continued to operate as usual.
“Certainly, we’ve heard from residents that are concerned,” Nevin told Newsday. “The community is fearful with the thought of gangs in their backyard — and, a murder — and they’re looking for more information.”
The massive response to wooded region also included Homeland security agents, crime scene investigators from the Nassau Police Department and the New York State Police K9 unit, as well as the Nassau County Medical Examiner’s Office.
