A shooting in upstate New York on Thursday killed one suspect and wounded two state troopers, authorities announced.
The shooting occurred after officers with the New York State Police and Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to an apartment complex in the Town of Malta just after 9 a.m. following reports of a domestic dispute, Major Christopher Gilroy of the NYSP said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
According to police, an individual involved in the dispute, later identified as 37-year-old Brandon R. Moore, refused to cooperate with law enforcement and barricaded himself in the apartment.
Approximately 30 minutes later, as officers were attempting negotiations, Moore “exited the apartment with what appeared to be a handgun,” Gilroy said.
After refusing to drop his firearm, Moore allegedly aimed his gun at officers, at which time they fired their weapons, fatally striking him.
Investigators later determined Moore’s weapon was a CO2-powered BB pistol, which was loaded at the time of the incident, Gilroy said.
Two state troopers sustained minor injuries during the incident and have since been released from the hospital. The victim involved in the domestic dispute also had non-life-threatening injuries.
Just before 10 a.m., the property manager at the complex, the Ellsworth Commons Apartments, sent an email to residents asking them to “shelter in place” due to “police activity on the 4th floor of building 2,” according to a screenshot of the message obtained by Albany CBS affiliate WRGB.
The shooting was an isolated incident and posed no threat to public safety, officials said. However, it was the second trooper-involved shooting in Malta in less than 24 hours.
On Wednesday afternoon, a man was fatally shot by New York State Police after opening fire on the troopers’ substation in Malta, officials said. The suspect was later identified as 59-year-old David Levine, a resident of the city.
According to police, Levine was located in the parking lot armed with a long gun. After refusing “multiple commands” to drop his weapon, he pointed his gun at the troopers, prompting them to fire their weapons, fatally striking him.
Malta, a town in central Saratoga County, is located approximately 30 miles north of Albany.
