Vice President JD Vance had a hard time keeping it together when handling the College Football Playoff National Football Trophy during a White House visit from the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The hardware snapped in two when Vance, a 2009 Ohio State graduate, tried lifting it from a display table. With a little help from one of the players being honored Monday, the vice president was seemingly able to quickly reassemble the trophy.
Vance flew from Washington D.C. to Atlanta on Inauguration Day to watch his home team beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the national championship in January.
“Hopefully everyone is cool with me skipping the inauguration so I can go to the national title game,” he posted on social media.
President Trump, who was also on hand to greet the Buckeyes on Monday, stayed behind to attend lavish ceremonies marking his return to power on game night. The team brought the 47th president a number 47 jersey.
Vance was born in Middletown, Ohio, and completed his undergraduate studies at Ohio State before attending Yale Law School. That’s where he met his wife Usha Vance. They have three children.
Ohio State’s football team has won nine national championships dating back to 1942. Only five teams have won more, including Yale, which has claimed a record 18 titles since 1874. They last won it all in 1927, according to the NCAA website.
Vance took dropping the 2025 championship trophy in stride.
“I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it,” he wrote on X alongside video of his fumble.
