Juan Soto, Pete Alonso homers not enough as Mets fall to Twins

For all the talk about who is hitting behind the Mets’ $760 million man this season, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso both did just fine on Tuesday night against the Twins.

After comments from Soto went viral about the difference between hitting in front of Aaron Judge as opposed to Alonso, naturally, the pair both went deep for solo shots off Minnesota’s starter Bailey Ober.

However, they both fell in vain. The Twins took the second game of the three-game set with a 6-3 victory.

Tylor Megill turned in a solid performance, allowing two earned runs — four total — over five innings, however, the Mets offense was largely quiet after their No. 2 and No. 3 hitters. Carlos Mendoza’s squad mustered together six total hits with their third and final run of the game coming on a sacrifice fly from Jesse Winker in the top of the seventh.

The Mets also saw a rare miscue from their bullpen. Max Kranick allowed two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work in the sixth and seventh innings giving the Twins all the insurance runs necessary.

While the attention this season has rightfully been on the starting pitching, the Amazins’ bats haven’t exactly arrived yet this season. The team entered Tuesday ranking 21st in team OPS and 18th in runs scored.

Francisco Lindor stepped up to the plate in the ninth as the tying run after the Twins kicked the ball around the field with some misplays in the field. However, the shortstop went down on strikes, ending the game at 6-3. Lindor has yet to break out this season as he’s experiencing another slow April slashing .219/.274/.328 after his 1-for-5 performance on Tuesday.

The Mets and Twins will wrap up their three-game set on Wednesday afternoon. Rocco Baldelli will send out David Festa while the Amazins have yet to announce their starter with Griffin Canning being scratched due to an illness.
