St. John’s adds another transfer in Oziyah Sellers from Stanford

Rick Pitino continues to retool the Red Storm.

St. John’s on Wednesday added Stanford transfer Oziyah Sellers, a 6-5 shooting guard who averaged 13.7 points per game and shot 40.1% on 3-point attempts last season.

“Not only does he bring great experience and tremendous outside shooting but his workout on his visit was incredible,” Pitino said in a statement. “Oziyah has terrific size and an unbelievable attitude. He’s a great addition.”

Sellers started all 35 of his appearances in his lone season with Stanford, whom he joined after two years at USC.

He joins a St. John’s team that ranked last in the Big East by shooting just 30.1% on 3-point attempts. In a social-media post, Pitino said Sellers “put on a shooting performance” during a recent workout.

Sellers, who hails from Hayward, Calif., was previously teammates in high school and at USC with St. John’s center Vince Iwuchukwu, who is set to return for his second season in Queens.

St. John’s has now added three transfers this offseason, with Sellers joining fellow sharp-shooter Joson Sanon (from Arizona State) and senior forward Bryce Hopkins (from Providence).

All three averaged at least 11.9 points per game last season, which should help pick up the slack after St. John’s leading scorer RJ Luis Jr. declared for the NBA Draft and entered the transfer portal.

The Red Storm’s backcourt remains a work in progress, particularly at point guard now that Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith are out of NCAA eligibility. St. John’s remains linked to UNC guard Ian Jackson, a former five-star prospect from the Bronx.
