With the Yankees set to begin a three-game series in Cleveland on Monday, the club placed Trent Grisham on the paternity list.
The center fielder is off to a scorching start this season, as Grisham is hitting .320/.393/.700 with six home runs and 13 RBI over 20 games for a club that barely used him last season. While Grisham is known for his top-notch defense, the career .216 hitter’s 1.093 OPS ranked sixth among players with at least 50 at-bats entering Monday.
“I’ve been really encouraged with what we’ve seen from the start of spring training,” Aaron Boone said Sunday before Grisham began a win over the Rays with leadoff homer. “I feel like he’s been having good at-bats every single day, and obviously he’s carried that into the season.”
Grisham’s fill-in has also been putting up strong numbers.
Jorbit Vivas, promoted in the veteran’s place, is off to a scorching start at Triple-A, slashing .343/.432/.493 with two homers, 14 RBI and four stolen bases over 20 games. The Yankees promoted the 24-year-old lefty swinger last season, though he didn’t see any big league action.
Acquired from the Dodgers in 2023, Vivas is considered the Yankees’ 20th-best prospect by MLB.com. He has split his time evenly between second and third base this season. The hot corner has been an area of concern for the Yankees since last season, but Vivas already has three errors at the position.
With Jazz Chisholm Jr. manning second base, Oswaldo Cabrera has been the Yankees’ primary starter at third base. Oswald Peraza has received a handful of starts as well.
