A New Jersey police officer is facing charges following a “domestic disturbance” at a home over the weekend.
Toms River Police Department officer Rebecca Sayegh, 32, was arrested Friday after allegedly breaking a glass door to enter a home in Berkeley before assaulting and threatening two victims inside, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.
A vehicle parked outside in a driveway was also found to be damaged.
Berkeley police arrived at the scene at 11:20 p.m. and Sayegh was taken into custody after resisting efforts “to peacefully place her under arrest,” Billhimer said.
Sayegh was released with a summons to appear before the warrant was re-filed due “to the serious nature of the charges.” She’s been charged with home invasion burglary, two counts of assault, two counts of criminal mischief, terroristic threats and resisting arrest.
Sayegh remains at Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
No other information about the incident was released.
According to the Asbury Park Press, Sayegh filed a lawsuit against Toms River Township and several former police department officials for alleged sexual harassment, retaliation and job discrimination in November 2024. The suit was dismissed earlier this month on the grounds of a two-year statute of limitations under state discrimination law.
She has worked for the Toms River police since 2016.
