Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes reacts to spinoff ‘Y: Marshalls’

Kayce Dutton isn’t hanging up his cowboy hat, yet.

“Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes, 41, will return for a spinoff series called “Y: Marshals,” CBS announced.

According to the official logline, “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals.”

The plot will follow Kayce as he combines, “his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Grimes posted the news on Instagram with the caption, “Cowboys don’t say goodbye, they say see you later.”

The hit cowboy drama premiered in 2018 and ended in 2024 after a five-season run that attracted over 17 million viewers, according to Paramount.

Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, “Yellowstone” star Ian Bohen coyly told The Post that “it’s not necessarily” the end.

The story followed the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana, including patriarch John (Costner) and his adult children Kayce (Luke Grimes), Jamie (Wes Bentley), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Beth’s husband, Rip (Cole Hauser).

When the show ended, Costner left after the first half of Season 5 amid rumors of a feud with creator Taylor Sheridan. The show handled this by killing John off.

Jamie, who was indirectly responsible, got killed in the finale, and Rip and Beth headed off for new pastures – and another spinoff show. Meanwhile, Kayce sold his family’s iconic ranch to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birminghan), the leader of the local Native American community who was John Dutton’s sometimes enemy, sometimes ally – for the paltry price of a dollar twenty-five an acre, since that’s the deal their ancestors made.

His condition was that Rainwater could never develop the ranch or sell it and Kayce and his family gets to stay in East Camp, the area where he lives with his family.

So, “Yellowstone” left Kayce living a quiet life on a small corner of his family’s ranch, which he was no longer in charge of. But, his new spinoff show will have him see more action and adventure as he reconnects with his military past.

This is one of numerous spinoffs. Michelle Pfeiffer will star in another spinoff called “The Madison,” and after the prequel series spinoff “1923” had a heartbreaking ending, it’s still getting a follow-up series called “1944.”

During a November 2024 interview, Grimes told The Post that the show has been a one of a kind experience.

“Any time we got to do any of the big cowboy stuff – like on horseback with cattle – with a lot of the cast and a lot of the real cowboys, there’s no way to fake moving cattle. Or CGI cattle. So we’d actually just have to get on [horses] and do it.”

He added, “I don’t know any other way in my life in which I would have had that experience.”

“Y: Marshals” will premiere in Spring of 2026. No further cast members have been announced beyond Grimes.

“Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan will exec produce, but the showrunner will be Spencer Hudnut  (“SEAL Team”).”In terms of Taylor’s involvement, we’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach told reporters, per Variety.
