The 16-year-old son of golfing great Tiger Woods failed for the second time to qualify for the U.S. Open.
Charlie Woods came up seven shots off the mark to make the cut at Florida’s Wellington National Golf Club on Thursday.
It marked the second consecutive year he came up short of playing in the prestigious tournament his dad has won three times. Tiger Woods, 49, is currently out of action after suffering a ruptured Achilles, which will likely require several months of recovery and physical therapy
But it just may be a matter of time before Charlie follows in his father’s footsteps on the links. He finished just three swings over par on Thursday, leaving him with a score of 75. He needed to shoot a 68 in order to advance.
Last year, Charlie missed the cut with a score of 81, according to ESPN.
Both professionals and amateurs are allowed to play in the U.S. Open. Each year, regardless of status, the top 154 golfers to try out are granted participation in the PGA major competition. Organizers said more than 10,000 golfers competed for the opportunity at courses nationwide this year.
The four-day tournament gets underway at Pennsylvania’s Oakmont Country Club on June 12.
