Up 4-2 in the fifth inning, the Yankees and Rockies paused for a rain delay at Coors Field that lasted one hour and 46 minutes. When play resumed, the Rockies got a run back and the Yankees were suddenly on the verge of losing the lead, and potentially the series to the lowly Colorado club.
J.C. Escarra came through for the Bombers, lining a two-out RBI (his second of the day) single to right to score Jasson Dominguez and give the Yankees a much-needed insurance run. The catcher finished 3-4 (his first three-hit game) on the day.
Righty Will Warren managed to get through a rough first inning and ended up fanning seven, walking two and allowing two runs on two hits over four innings before the delay ended his outing. Mark Leiter Jr. (3-3) earned the win and Luke Weaver managed his 8th save after giving up a run in the ninth.
Antonio Senzatela took his majors-leading 9th loss.
Aaron Judge, who had a tiebreaking double in the top of the 5th, went 2-4 to raise his batting average to .397. He’s reached base in 49 games this season.
The Yankees (32-20) have now won six straight series and are 13-4 over their last 17 games.
They head next to Anaheim for a three-game series with the Angels starting Monday night before a weekend series, and World Series rematch, with the Dodgers.
