After hurting his hamstring in the Yankees’ 7-3 win over the Dodgers on Sunday, Luke Weaver is expected to land on the injured list, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Weaver, who underwent an MRI on Monday, could miss 4-6 weeks, Passan added, though an official timetable will be determined on Tuesday when the Yankees start a three-game series with the Guardians.
On Sunday, Aaron Boone said Weaver “felt something” in his hamstring while stretching late in the game. The righty had already warmed up, but Tim Hill had to finish the game.
Weaver has been enjoying another dominant season in the Bronx, recording a 1.05 ERA and eight saves over 24 games. He took over the closer’s role for the second time in as many seasons after Devin Williams recorded an 11.25 ERA over his first 10 games with the Yankees.
Williams has been much better since being stripped of closing duties, not permitting an earned run in 13 of his last 15 games. Williams did, however, have a shaky save in Anaheim on May 27, allowing two earned runs to the Angels. It was his first save opportunity in about a month.
With Weaver sidelined, it stands to reason that the two-time National League Reliever of the Year and impending free agent will resume ninth-inning responsibilities, though a few Yankees have picked up saves this season.
