Yankees bats go quiet again as they get swept by Red Sox

The Bombers left their bats in the Bronx this weekend.

The Yankees were shut out by the Red Sox in their 2-0 loss capping off a brutal weekend at Fenway Park. Brayan Bello carved up the Yanks’ prolific offense as they had no answer for the 26-year-old. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. A Trevor Story RBI single in the first and Rafael Devers solo homer in the fifth would be all Alex Cora’s squad needed for the victory.

AL East-leading New York went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and was swept in a series for the first time this year, getting shut out for the third time. The Yankees’ four runs matched their fewest in a three-game series at Fenway Park, from June 20-22, 1916, and from Sept. 28-30, 1922.

Aaron Judge went 1-for-12 in the series with a solo homer and nine strikeouts, dropping his major league-leading average to .378. He has struck out three or more times in three straight games for the third time in his big league career.

Max Fried put together another strong performance as the southpaw tossed seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out nine. Fried’s season ERA is still dazzling at 1.90 as he finds himself in the thick of the AL Cy Young conversation.

The ace entered Sunday 7-0 with a 0.83 ERA in eight starts after a Yankees’ loss.

The Yanks will welcome the Angels to Yankee Stadium starting Monday for a four-game set. Clarke Schmidt will take the ball as he looks to continue his solid season. The right-hander enters Monday’s contest with a 3.60 ERA. Jose Soriano — 3.86 ERA — will toe the slab for Ron Washington’s squad.
